Understanding the Medical Condition of Hypersomnia

The Medical Condition of Hypersomnia

The sleep disorder of hypersomnia is one which many individuals may not be familiar with as a general rule. Though individuals have heard of other sleep conditions such as insomnia and bed wetting, this is a condition which occurs more frequently than may be assumed. It is important to discuss general information relating to this problem to present informative information which may lead individuals to determine whether they in fact suffer from the condition.

Defining The Problem

This problem can easily be defined as a disorder where an individual gets more than an adequate amount of sleep each night yet still feels tired through out the day. This individual may sleep more than 10 hours per night on a regular basis and take naps in order to cure their daytime sleepiness.

What Are The Symptoms

The main symptom relative to this condition is the need to sleep long periods of time each night. In addition, a lack of alertness and not feeling awake during the daytime hours are two other symptoms of this sleep disorder.

Causes Of The Problem

There are a few cited causes that have been stated to bring about The disorder. Certain things which can cause it include having a genetic disposition to such a disorder, brain damage, clinical depression and fibromyalgia. This type of medical condition is also seen alongside other forms of disorders affecting sleep such as narcolepsy and sleep apnea. In addition to the previously mentioned causes, those who have mononucleosis may also have hypersomnia as a result of their medical condition.

Can It Be Treated?

For those who have it, this type of medical condition may cause a great deal of disruption in their life. For this reason, possible treatments are always being sought after by individuals who have the disorder. Some potential treatments for a disorder of this type include the use of a few different kinds of medications such as stimulants or antidepressants. In addition, eliminating an initial cause of the problem, such as treating clinical depression, may help to eliminate the hypersomnia as well.

Effects of The Condition

The effects of the condition are wide and varied depending upon the
individual who suffers from this disorder and the extent of their medical condition. It is important for the afflicted individual to look into possible treatments for the problem, as this condition can make them more likely to have work-related accidents due to their tiredness or simply miss out on a good part of their day simply by having to sleep all the time.

Summary

This sleep disorder is one that can be quite burdensome for
those who have it. Even when the individual sleeps for a good deal of time during the night, their body is still telling them that the sleep they received is not enough. This can take a toll on an individual who has to carry on with basic daily living activities and feels so drowsy while doing so that it makes the easiest of tasks difficult. By seeing one’s medical health professional for an accurate diagnosis and treatment, the individual may be on their way to restful nights and alert days.
