What are Sleep Disorders?



Put simply, a Sleep Disorder is a troublesome pattern of sleep that could involve many different patterns of disturbances. For example:

Abnormal sleep behaviour
Sleeping too much
Not being able to sleep at all
Falling asleep at inappropriate times
Obstruction of the airway during sleep
Not able to fall into sleep
Not able to stay awake
Walking in your sleep
Grinding of teeth
Sudden waking from sleep

The above list are just some of the more common problems, although there many many more that exist.

Sleep Walking
Somnambulism, also known as sleep walking, is a sleep disorder. Many individuals worldwide suffer from this disorder and are interested in knowing more.

Sleep Apnea
This is where you keep waking up from your sleep many times during your sleep period because of an obstruction in your airway. The common signs of this are loud snoring and laboured breathing.

Restless Leg Syndrome
RLS is an uncomfortable problem that occurs when you are sleeping, lying down or sitting. It causes uncontrollable urges to move your legs to relieve the irritation.

Narcolepsy
This is a condition where you can fall asleep without any warning or have any control over it. Someone suffering from Narcolepsy might find it impossible to keep awake as they suffer from short sleep attacks during the day.

Insomnia
Insomnia is not a disease or disorder on its own, it is an indicator that you have some sort of an underlying problem. There are a variety of things that can cause insomnia from sleep apnea to stress.

Snoring
Almost everyone knows what this is, but few people know what actually causes it. Everyone from children to the elderly may snore and it is important to find out the cause as well as the different ways to treat it.

Sleep Paralysis
This sleep disorder revolves around the time when an individual is asleep, either when they first wake up or as they fall asleep.
